Okay so its “new year new you” time and I don’t know about you but I am being bombarded with health kick propaganda from every source possible. This is great unless it’s your birthday and your boyfriend’s birthday in January! My birthday is 16th January, next Friday, (FYI yes I am accepting presents by post ;)) and I am certainly going to be enjoying a few glasses of bubbly and eating some cake! However this isn’t the only reason I am not a fan of detoxing/hitting the gym hard in January…
EASE BACK INTO IT
Yes we all ate a little bit too much for 2 weeks, didn’t move as much and feel a little bit crappy that our abs have become flab but I know if I go from one week eating whatever I want, snacking/grazing on Thorntons chocolates to restricting myself/my calories and having zero chocolate intake, I am going to be one cranky bitch! Basically I like to ease myself back to my normal 90/10% healthy ratio so let’s say during Christmas and New Year it was more like 50/50% then for the first two weeks of January I’m looking to be at about 75/25% i.e healthy nutritious whole foods and meals with the odd extra leftover christmas treats, some homemade banana bread for example and of course my birthday meal out! Then I’ll probably be ready for a nice little juice cleanse or no sugar detox in February.
January is winter time and probably one of the coldest months of the year and when lots of people get sick! This is not the type of weather to be having ice cold juices all day and garden salads! Not saying that I don’t have the odd juice or salad in January but I just don’t fancy them! You need to balance your entire life when it comes to health and if it’s freezing outside then we need to be more warm and toasty on the insides! This time of year is when I crave lovely homemade stews, soups, casseroles, hot chocolates. I always feel like I need a little bit more stodge too to stay healthy and well. The stodge I’m talking about is stodgy type food like porridge, brown rice, sweet potatoes! You won’t see me cutting out those carbs in January! I love the word stodge!
IT WON’T LAST TILL JUNE
If you are starting a diet, crazy new fitness regime this month and you honestly can’t see yourself keeping it up till June then the only feelings it’s going to eventually bring is guilt, disappointment, frustration in yourself and they are not healthy emotions when we are planning on making 2015 the year you are MOST fabulous!! Instead why not make small changes this month, add a couple more next month and a couple more next month and then by June you will be like “WOW look at all these changes I’ve made and kept, I’m feeling FABULOUS WOO WOO WOO and it’s bikini season so now I’m at a great stage to hit the gym a little harder!” Here’s some examples for small changes and one’s I’ll be making. I consider myself a healthy person and healthy weight so my changes aren’t drastic but if you have a little bit of a longer journey ahead of you then I have some ideas for you too…
|My small changes||Examples of small changes for longer journey|
|Morning big glass of water||Swap all fizzy/fruit drinks for water|
|2 runs a week||Pilates class once a week|
|Cut back on sugar especially honey in morning lemon water||1 takeout meal a month|
|Book some personal training sessions||Walk to and from station/school/shops|
|Eat more local organic produce||Buy organic berries and apples|
|Do a 2 or 3 day veggie juice cleanse||1 run a week|
Remember the idea is that you are not in the exact same situation this time next year, post Christmas, with the exact same resolutions to lose weight and get fitter! You want to be healthy and fitter this time next year and then continue to enjoy your new found lifestyle throughout 2016 and life forever rather then coming back to square 1 every single January!
I hope that you enjoyed this post. It’s my honest opinion on things and it’s what works for me but I know that some of you out there will just want to DETOX and HIT THE GYM HARD in January and if that makes you feel good then go for it! I guess it’s easier if you don’t have a birthday! 😉
Love, Lottie x
