So we are still a good solid nine weeks away from Christmas and honestly I’ve been feeling a bit like I just want this year to be over so I can have a fresh new year ahead of me. I had to give myself a little talking to as I am not one to wish time away and I know I don’t need a fresh year or even a new week to start living to my fullest and achieving some goals. So for the last quarter of the year we can choose to get lazy and succumb to the Christmas slump or we can pull ourselves up, make exciting plans and feel the best we’ve felt all year because why not? So here’s some ways I think we can end 2016 feeling healthy, happy and ready to start 2017 ahead of the game…
Remember when you take care of yourself you have the energy to have fun, give fully to your relationships and career and you will feel positive about life and the future. When I feel unmotivated and unsure of how to stay on track, I simply ask myself what do I need to feel healthy and balanced?
I need less social interactions and more human interactions – it doesn’t make me feel very positive and well when I’m on social media too much. I regularly delete and reload the apps on my phone to give myself a break (just make sure you know your passwords) and I think this time of year is the best time of year to spend more time with your loved ones. With a social community like mine, I love to interact with people online and of course read blogs, scroll through Instagram and watch Youtube videos but it’s about setting boundaries and not letting your social interactions override your human interactions. Is the best part of your day sitting on your phone checking your likes or laughing your head off with your best friend?
I need to be working towards a goal – as I work for myself I can sometimes feel like I have my fingers in a few too many pies and when my mind is scattered like this it doesn’t make me feel great. To feel focused I make sure I know what projects and goals I am working towards and I make them specific. I have two in the run up to Christmas which I am so passionate about so I know that when I feel lost and unsure where to start with my to do list I go back to these projects and remember that they are my main focus. Focused mind, happy mind!
I need to drink enough water – I don’t know why but I went through a stage recently where I just wasn’t drinking enough water. I think perhaps when the weather is colder I don’t crave it as much but oh my gosh I noticed such a difference in my skin and energy levels when I wasn’t. My skin got so dry and textured, my hair felt dry and I was getting those afternoon dips and craving sweet treats when really I just hadn’t drank enough water. If I want glowing skin, bright eyes and no sugar cravings then I need to sip that h20 all day long. In the winter I like warm water with ginger or mint too.
I need to take care of my skin – touching on my skin again, I feel so much more confident when I’m taking care of my skin. I don’t like wearing a lot of make up but sometimes feel the need to wear more in the winter. I have to up my skincare during the colder months and after crying for help to my one of my besties and natural beauty guru, she replied saying “oils, oils, oils!” So I’m now lovingly massaging Neal’s Yard Argan Oil into my skin every evening and it’s self care bliss! And of course I also plan to do laser hair removal any time soon, as winter is the best time for this procedure. Check out this post What To Expect From Your Laser Hair Removal Session With Touch Up Laser – Touch Up Laser if you wish to learn more about this procedure.
I need to move my body – I know I know it’s hard for me too to keep up the motivation to hit a 7am workout class when it looks like the middle of the night and pouring with rain but my body, my mind, my soul (yes my soul) feels a million times better when I move every day. I’ve tried changing things up a bit and have been doing more weights and resistance training as well as my Pilates workouts. I mean who doesn’t want to look and feel smoking at those Christmas and New Year parties.
I need to get outside – so I might not be up for park runs this time of year but I do LOVE being out in the cold fresh air. The weekend is when I love to get outside and will go for a long park walk or hit a market wrapped up warm and feeling cosy.
I need to eat with the season – I’ve always tried to keep up with what to eat seasonally and you’ll notice it should feel intuitive to eat more soups since and I am going to find the best soup makers as things like root vegetables this time of year. A cold raw salad just doesn’t cut it so I’ll be in my kitchen making homemade parsnip soup, roasted butternut squash and beetroot brownies. Nuts and keeping up my protein are also great for this time of year to keep me feeling strong.
I need to get enough sleep – when I don’t get enough sleep I feel irritable, unfocused and run down. Recently I’ve had a few awful nights sleep and literally felt like I’d been hit by a bus the next day. Lack of sleep has such a negative ripple effect into all other areas of your life. I need 7-8 hours and to do this I know I need to switch off the TV, not look at my phone in bed, spray my pillow with a beautiful calming scent and take my magnesium. I then close my eyes, focus on my breathing, relax my body and I relive moments of my day in my mind or I dream of exciting lovely things in the future. Happy thoughts equal a happy sleep and a happy morning.
I need to let my hair down – It’s the battle between staying in watching X Factor and getting out and catching up with the many people you haven’t seen all year! I say – get out! I’m not saying every night of the week but I love going for a dinner with friends midweek or cocktails at the weekend. I think this time of year is the best time of year to let your hair down and find that work life balance. You can always catch up on X Factor cosy in bed on Sunday morning with some healthy breakfast and a cuppa.
Make the end of 2016, the best of 2016 and ask yourself what will make you sparkle and spring into 2017!
Love, Lottie x
