Do you eat breakfast watching the news, lunch scrolling through emails, snacks scanning instagram and dinner while on the phone? When did we become so busy that sitting down and enjoying a meal without doing anything else now seems impossible!
I am determined to start mindful eating!
I’ve recently become aware that I really struggle with this but there’s a pull inside me that knows I need to address it. That’s why this post isn’t about me saying”hey look how great I am at this, you should do it too!”, it’s about me saying “hey look how pants I am at this, help me tackle this step in improving my wellbeing and why don’t you give it a go too!”
So what is mindful or conscious eating and why is it so important?
When we eat mindfully, we appreciate our food and get so much more pleasure from it. I love eating, it’s an enjoyable part of everyone’s day surely- most of us actually look forward to the next time we get to eat. So why don’t we savour the moment more. Have you ever been holding a meal or a snack and then not even been conscious of eating it then suddenly it’s gone so you must of!? I’m always like “damn it” when that happens!
But seriously, unconscious eating can be really negative for our health. It’s not great for your digestion because you’re probably not chewing your food properly and whilst talking, reading or watching we are then disconnected to feelings of fullness/hunger and can over or under eat. It’s impossible to be in tune with knowing when you’ve had enough!
I want to eat without distraction and see if it’s make a difference to my overall wellbeing. I want to see if it changes the relationship I have with food, which is a healthy one at the moment but could it be healthier? You see, I’m gradually beginning to realise and understand that health is not just about the food we eat but its about how we eat, the emotions we attach to food and understanding that we are all so uniquely different!
This isn’t going to be easy but it’s fun and exciting to set challenges and tasks! I’m challenging myself to eat mindfully at every single meal from now until next week and I will then post a Wellbeing Wednesday on how I honestly got on!

1. Eat every meal and snack either at the table or sitting on chair with absolutely no distractions. No TV, computer, phone, book or magazine.
2. Eat slowly, chew properly and savour every bite before taking the next.
3. Let go of any judgemental thoughts about the food you are eating. Only think positively about how the food is nourishing and energising you.
4. Take some deep breathes before you eat and notice how hungry you are a scale of 1-10.
5. Pay attention to how your body feels after your meal.
