Your reasons for starting Pilates or yoga might be to improve your flexibility, to get rid of that back pain or to tone your butt but you might also find you do a bit of soul searching too. So many of my clients say to me that they realise overtime that it’s not just about what they do in a session, it’s about how they feel.
When they walk through that door, I can feel and see the stress on their faces and in their bodies and sometimes all it takes is laying on the mat for that to melt away.
I’m constantly amazed by the effects of movement on our mood, minds and mental state. Often, a class will make me feel on top of the world, other times it will bring out my creative side and so many ideas will come into my head. And every now and again a session will unblock a whole load of emotion whether that be negative or positive ones.
This was really prominent in a particular session during the yoga retreat I attended last month. It was a yin yoga session which is a type of yoga to help regulate the flow of energy in the body. You take yoga stretches much deeper than a normal practice and it can bring up a lot of emotions and feelings.
After the hour session, nobody could move! The whole room felt like it was filled with this heavy emotion that everyone had released and nobody moved or spoke for a good 15 minutes. It was very overwhelming. This was the first time I’d seen so literally how our minds and bodies are connected.
One of my best friends, Natalie, was next to me during the class and she said to me after how she could feel I was going through a lot during the hour session. She could feel my frustration and built up energy and knew that these stretches were working way deeper than just my muscles. I wasn’t huffing or puffing or fidgeting to make it obvious; she could just feel what I was feeling!
My other yoga instructor friends have told me how crying is quite a common after a yoga session. Sometimes for no reason.
Pilates is less of a spiritual practice than yoga but I definitely believe it be so beneficial for your mind. Whether that’s because you’re simply taking time for you and the same benefits would come from a walk or reading a book. I don’t know but I do know that when I get on my mat it’s going to be a journey, not just for my body but for my soul.
