My first experience with yoga was Bikram yoga and I can definitely say it wasn’t love at first pose. The room was way to cramped, the stifling heat and repetitive poses weren’t for me. I know that a lot of people are hooked on Bikram but I needed to continue my search to find love.
I left my yoga practice for a while as I fell more in love with Pilates and my teaching training however after qualifying as a Pilates instructor and teaching/doing hundreds of classes I felt I needed to move my body in a different way and take a class where I wasn’t in ‘teacher mode’. This is when an amazon deal for 10 yoga sessions at Yotopia Yoga in Covent Garden came up and I thought perfecto lets get going again!
I noticed on the timetable they had a big variety of different yoga styles. They also had a hot and cold studio but no bikram (phew.) I took the advantage of these classes and found that dynamic flow was my favorite as I like the continuous movements into static poses and each class is different but evolves around a theme. Each teacher has a different style and approach to dynamic flow but that’s what I love- diversity!
Another thing I love about my classes is the spiritual approach a lot of the teachers have. I love being fed uplifting and thought provoking quotes/mantras throughout a yoga class. That hour/hour and a half is time for me to switch off from the rest of the world and focus on my positive state of mind.
Yoga makes me feel more present, grounded and positive. It makes my body and mind feel flexible yet calm. I will continue to practice yoga along side my Pilates until I’m 100 years old if I can!
