In the last two weeks I have been lucky enough to have two fabulous PT sessions. One at UrbanCave in Soho which is where I am also teaching 121 Pilates on Thursdays and will tell you more about in another post and another session with my lovely friend and awesome trainer Tally Rye. As you know, I love my Pilates and Yoga and I’ve never really done much lifting of the weights or HIIT and I must admit I was a little scared but I’m all about telling people to try things out of there comfort zone so I thought I’d better see what all this weight lifting was about! 😉
My session at Urban Cave was with the beautiful and super fit Sandra who is training for WBFFUK. We started with medicine ball arm circles, rotations, squats and lunges and I was already a little shocked by the weight of the uppercut bag and the medicine ball. We went on to do a boxing tabata set with a combination of jabs, uppercuts and hooks. This was so much fun and Sandra showed me the technique as I’ve never boxed before. I couldn’t believe how exhausted I was from punching plus my arms were already aching! I can definitely see it being a great stress reliever…
Then came the deadlifts with a 11kg bar, Sandra told me she deadlifts 70kg!! I’d never been shown the proper technique for these but Sandra taught me how to do them so you really feel your hamstrings and glutes by keeping the bar very close to your shins and not going to low to the ground. After the technique part we went on to do a circuit of shoulder weighted squats, resistance band side lunges and burpees travelling across the room. I definitely feel uncomfortable getting my heart rate up but this circuit was perfect as I could concentrate on technique and certain muscles groups for the squats and lunges and then go for it with the killer burpees- I hate burpees but they are so effective! We finished the session with some animal flow which is a new way of movement created by Mark Fitch- check this video out to see what animal flow is all about. I’m definitely going to be adding some of the moves to my Pilates workouts.
After I had recovered from this amazing session, I went to see the wonderful fitness foodie Tally Rye, who you must follow on instagram, @cleanfitlifestyle, for the best food porn ever. The session with Tally was completely different but just as challenging and I was still fearing lifting anything too heavy! Tally gave me confidence that I was strong enough and boy did I feel it the next day and the next day! We started the session with some dynamic plank moves to warm up and then Tally wanted to see my technique for squats and lunges. This is where I feared lifting anything too heavy and having a bar across my shoulders felt different and scary. I can imagine people feel the same when they first get on a Pilates reformer machine so it was great to experience being a beginner again.
We finished the session with a HIIT style circuit of tyre burpees, you jump up onto a big tyre then down into a burpee, rope swings, tyre flips (this type is 80kg- no wonder I felt every muscle in my body the next day) prowler pushes and frog jumps which made my legs want to fall off! This is when Tally had to put up with me moaning! She didn’t let me give up!
I can definitely see how these type of training can seriously change your body shape! Both my sessions were so fun and made me feel strong and powerful. Some people love doing this type of training 3 or more times a week complimented by some yoga and Pilates. For my personal body shape and fitness goals I don’t think I would want to do this type of training more than once a week. I am dedicated and so in love with my Pilates and yoga and I personally like a softer look to my body and would be worried that I would get a little to muscly with this type of training. I agree when personal trainers say you don’t necessarily get bulky with weight lifting which is what a lot of girls are scared off. I would say it’s a fabulous form of training to add to your fitness routine but as always I am all about balance and doing what feels best for you and your body.

Sandra and Tally are my go to girls for weights sessions so be sure to book in with them.
