Palma is the perfect girly getaway and it’s where four of my best friends and I jetted off to with our 54 bikinis between us last week. We are all into wellbeing and enjoy the feeling of moving our bodies and eating whole nourishing food, we even love doing little group meditations together and have just started to run our own wellness retreats but we also love sharing a bottle of wine, eating our hearts out and laying on the beach for 12 hours reading on holiday. Holiday life is very different to my usual London life, no workout classes or healthy cafes and it’s important to embrace this change and really change up your routine when on holiday but over the years of holidaying, I’ve found there’s ways you can still feel balanced and healthy by end of a getaway just with a bit of a tan and lots of happy memories. Here are my top tips to having a balanced girly getaway; to have fun and let your hair down but not end the week away feeling bloated from booze, stiff from lounging on sun beds and unmotivated to get back to your healthy lifestyle at home…
1. Move Throughout The Day
Walking and swimming are the main ways I move my body on holiday. My usual week would consist of Pilates, yoga, some spinning and strength training but on holiday it’s so nice to swim which I never do in London. You don’t even have to make it a huge part of your day and dedicate specific time to do lengths, just jump in the ocean or pool when you feel like moving and have a splash around. I feel so lethargic and delirious if I just lay in the sun all day not moving and the ocean is so energising and healing. We were staying in Palma old town which is stunning to walk around and we were walking for at least an hour every day in total as our apartment was a 15 minute walk from the main restaurants, shops and bars. Don’t be afraid of letting go of your usual workout routines and make the most of your surroundings.
2. Bring Your Fave Healthy Snacks From Home
I do love a supermarket shop on holiday and if you’re staying in an apartment, it’s great to stock it up with fresh fruit, yogurt, eggs etc but I always find bringing some of my favourite healthy snacks from home is great too. I packed two boxes from the Nairns Gluten Free Range, some super seeded crackers, super seeded oatcakes and their on the go cheese crackers. I ended up having them as a snack when we got back from the beach and also for the most delicious breakfast to start the day. I usually have porridge as oats always keep me full and energised so the oatcakes were such a nice alternative especially in the heat. I preferred the super seeded crackers with the savoury toppings like egg and avocado. Here’s some of my favourite topping ideas.
Mashed Banana and Yogurt
Avocado and Pumpkin Seeds
Greek Yogurt and Fresh Fig
3. Get An Amazing Apartment Playlist To Dance To
One of my favourite parts of the day on holiday is getting ready to go out at the apartment; putting our holiday playlist on, having a glass of wine and dancing around as we decide what to wear and analyse our new tan lines. Dancing really energises me, helps me relieve stress and simply makes me feel amazing if I look ridiculous. Put all your fave songs in one playlist and take your time getting ready. There’s never a rush to get anywhere on holiday!
4. Listen To Your Body
The biggest change I find when I’m on holiday is that I can listen to my body more. Without the fuzz of busy every day life, I can actually sense when I feel hungry and when I’m full, when I naturally want to move and when I need to rest. Take time to really listen to your body. I find on holiday I naturally find balance when I do this. For example; somedays I might not fancy a huge lunch, I’ll know when I’m craving fish or pasta, I can feel when my shoulders are tight and need a stretch. Don’t just eat because it’s a meal time or eat the first thing you see on the menu, really listen to what your body is telling you and let that guide your choices on holiday.
5. Let Go
Finally, letting go on holiday is the most important thing for me. The funny thing is I do so many things on holiday which I wouldn’t at home like drink every day, eat ice cream every day and am honestly horizontal for a lot of hours. Yes I do all of the above too which keep me feeling balanced; have healthy snack options, move and listen to my body but letting go is the most important. Just don’t stress, let go of work commitments, guilt and how you look in a bikini and make it your priority to just feel good from the inside out!
My Palma Guide is coming soon to the blog.
