We are half way through February and I thought I’d talk a little bit about my personal fitness routine, goals and how I stay motivated. I have some weeks where I’m less active than others usually the week before my period or when I’m travelling but I feel like I have been quite consistently motivated for the past 6 months due to a few reasons like finding more routine, having buddies to workout with and getting to know my optimal time to workout. There’s still things I’d like to improve which I’ll talk about too.
I try to now look at my week as a whole and how much stress I might be putting on myself. I’ll alter my week of fitness dependent on whether I’m rushing around London a lot or have lots of early morning starts for instance. I don’t see the point anymore in stressing myself out to get to a class across town after a late night and then having to rush to teach or get to another meeting/event. I won’t gain anything from that workout apart from feeling exhausted. I like to feel fresh and mindful during all my different activities so being in the right frame of mind is key.
Current Weekly Routine
So currently I attend 3 F45 workouts a week which is a combination of HIIT and strength training. I go for a run once or twice a week, usually between 4-6 kilometres which I’d like to up to 10 kilometres by the end of the month. I do my own mat Pilates class at least once a week whether that’s at home myself or attending a group class. I then try to get to a yoga or reformer Pilates class whenever I can too and take the occasional Psycle class.
I’ve set myself a goal to find a regular yoga class that I go to every week, the same studio and teacher. I tend to drop in and out whenever I can which is something I try to encourage people not to do. It’s great to change things up every now and again but I think finding a class you love and sticking to it each week to see improvements and development is ideal. I have a few in mind so I’ll keep you updated on that.
I also want to get back on the reformer regularly again, I used to love it so much and would go 3-4 times a week! I then fell a bit more in love with mat Pilates and other kinds of training but I’m going to try to incorporate more reformer back into my week.
There’s not enough hours in the day or days in the week to fit my ideal week of fitness in as I’d also love to include bouldering and cycling but week by week I’ve found having a set routine and same gym to go too really enjoyable and keeps me on track.

What keeps me motivated?
So I know for sure that my optimal time to workout, especially a more intense workout, is in the morning and latest lunchtime. In the evening I just am mentally quite drained from a full on day and tend to clock watch because I just want to leave and get on with my evening. I love my evenings to be with my boyfriend, friends and family- don’t let your fitness take over your life so much so that you don’t have one! And my body doesn’t respond as well to movement in the evening apart from more restorative movements, stretching and breathing.
The biggest factor that’s kept me so consistency motivated is joining F45 Tottenham Court Road, I’ve never stuck at a gym style workout for so long. It’s something I actually look forward to and it helps that there’s such a sense of community there. Amy and Mike are the owners and are the loveliest humans as are the other trainers. There’s so many friendly faces and as someone that spends a lot of my day to day life on my own, it’s so nice to feel part of a team.
If you’re looking for a new workout buddy and want to meet new people but a regular gym is a little too intimidating then I’d really recommend trying a F45 class. Freya Active partnered with YouGov to look into gym habits and found that 42% of us would actually be very happy to have a chat in the gym rather than solo squatting, but only 13% of us would be brave enough to make the first move and go over to someone for a chat. So make the first move, it is the month of giving love after all!
RUNNING WITH MY BESTIE
I’ve always ran on and off but recently been quite consistent and not missing a week without a 5k run outdoors. Despite the cold I do love getting outside in the fresh air and Natalie and I have been meeting up every Sunday morning to run together before getting some brunch. It’s our own little run brunch club. We take it easy and just catch up along the way. Even if we haven’t been 100% up for it, we go for it anyway and always feel so good after. The brunch is always so exciting after too.
I’ve always been able to motivate myself to roll my mat out at home and do my own Pilates workout or tune in to some of my favourite online workouts on YouTube or Pilates Anytime. I think once you get into the habit of doing it it becomes much easier and even setting yourself a set day and time to do your home practice like you would a class. I’m trying to have one day a week now where I don’t travel around London or meet up with anyone (haha- my anti-social me day) and this is the day I like to put my music on and flow on my mat.
What I do when I’m not feeling motivated.
DON’T WRITE THE DAY OFF
Okay perhaps the morning didn’t go to plan and you missed your workout (it happens to me often when I sleep through my alarm or my trains are rubbish) but don’t let the day defeat you. Pack that activewear in your bag and head outside for a lunch time run or walk in the park, find a class after work or hit the gym before heading home. Use social media as a positive tool to turn the day around; I love finding my favourite fitness girls to follow and save their workouts if I need some inspiration. I also have short Pilates workouts on my YouTube channel that you can squeeze into any time of day.
FIND SOMETHING TO LOOK FORWARD TO
I never want to live for the weekend or wish months of my life away waiting for a holiday and most the time I live for Mondays as much as I do Fridays but sometimes you can’t help those start of the week blues. If I feel this way, I’ll think about all the lovely things I have to look forward to. Maybe it’s a birthday celebration, a best friend’s wedding, a summer holiday or brunch with the girls at the weekend. Even this small thought will cheer me up and usually makes me want to look after myself by eating healthy and moving my body because I want to feel fabulous inside and out for that event.
So if I’m feeling completely zapped and unmotivated to exercise, I sometimes know that it’s better for me to just relax, chill out and give myself a day off. However, what I do like to do on these days is just plan ahead. I get my diary out and book some F45 workouts in for the next week, I find some Pilates inspiration to try out next time I hit my mat and I text Natalie to organise that run. Just the thought of some lovely movement on days ahead when I do feel motivated helps my mood and allows me to just relax into a day of rest. Rest is a becoming a very important part of my life.
Love, Lottie x
