It was recently World Water Week and One Difference challenged me to only use 5L for one day to raise awareness for their vision for a world in which everyone has access to clean and safe water, forever. Wow, were my eyes opened to how much I take clean fresh water for granted. “Over 2 million people die every year from waterborne diseases and most are children under 5 years old.” – One Difference …
For one day, use just 5 litres of water; this includes, brushing your teeth, washing your hands, flushing the toilet, having a cup of tea, washing vegetables, having a shower etc.
To put this into perspective, average daily water consumption in the UK is around 150 litres but the African population typically only has access to 5 litres of water a day….and they walk 6km to get it!
I was provided with a 5 litre jerry can so I could see how much water I was using.
What I Learnt
Okay so I honestly had to think so hard not to automatically turn the tap on when I washed my hands or washed a piece of fruit. The whole challenge opened by eyes to how much I use water without even being conscious of it.
It just made me realise how lucky we are to have unlimited access to water from our taps. It’s made me think twice about doing things like having a shower in the morning and then washing my hair at night or leaving the tap running while I brush my teeth.
How You Can Make A Difference
One is a life-changing ethical bottled water brand and you’ve probably seen them whilst on the go. When you buy a One water the profit funds sustainable water projects for some of the world’s most vulnerable people. You really can be a hero every time you buy a bottle of water.
I would love to have more time to get involved in charity projects and help vulnerable people in the world because we really are so fortunate and one day I really hope I can do this in a big way but right now, these little things go a long way!
And why not do a 5L challenge yourself and share it on your social media to raise awareness to your friends, family and followers.
