As someone who has spent the majority of her life in either a dance, yoga or Pilates studio, I forget that it can actually be quite an intimidating space for people who are new to exercise and this sometimes cliquey environment. Remember that everyone is there with the same goal in mind, to feel good and do something for themselves. Whether there’s a group of giggly work friends or the bendiest girl on Instagram in your class, here’s my 5 tips to feel confident in a yoga or Pilates studio…
1. Set A Positive Mantra
It’s natural to feel a little nervous before trying a new studio or class but remember it’s all in your mind and you have the power to change that. Firstly, you’ve done the hard first step which is booking yourself into the class and making the intention to improve yourself so give yourself a little love. Before entering the class or on your way to the studio, take some deep breathes and come up with a positive mantra to boost your self esteem and remind yourself why you are going. Some examples are: “I am strong, I am beautiful, I am enough”, “I choose calm over anxiety”, “May the next few moments be a period of beautiful transformation” – I love that last one because it also sets a beautiful intention for your class and no matter what happens, know that you’ll be taking a baby step towards a better you.
2. Wear Your “Total Babe” Activewear
I always feel more confident in activewear I love and that fits well compared to a baggy t shirt and my old see through leggings. I recommend investing in a gorgeous outfit that makes you feel incredible. If you look the part you are going to feel the part and finding your perfect activewear is key to enjoying your class even more. I love soft comfy fabric that feels like I’m being sucked in too. I also love a matching crop and leggings duo but maybe you’re more of a all in one girl or a harem pant lover- try some different styles and find something thats perfect for you!
3. Make New Friends
The studio is a perfect place to make new friends, everyone is so friendly and welcoming and will be more than happy to help you if you aren’t sure of where to put your shoes or what to take into the studio so don’t be afraid to smile and say hello to people. I’ve met friends for life in Pilates and yoga studios, which is great because you will forever have someone to workout with, practice headstands with in your own time and grab a matcha latte after with in your cute activewear which is totally expectable nowadays. You’ll get more and more confident as you build a new little community of friends.
4. Have A Sense Of Humour
Remember that it’s just yoga or Pilates, not the end of the world! If you fall over during a balance or are dying after 3 sit ups, don’t be hard on yourself! Have a sense of humour and remind yourself it should be fun and enjoyable. Check out this quote from http://yogahubperth.com.au/ from a fellow teacher (she is so right), “As a Pilates instructor, I see my clients get so frustrated with themselves if they wobble slightly during a balance or after struggling with a new move but I try to remind them to lighten up a little. Everyone starts somewhere and it would be boring if you were perfect at everything all the time!” This relaxed mindset will most likely make you perform better, build your confidence in yourself and you’ll have a fun time which is one of my main reasons for class. It’s not just about being good at something, it’s about being good to yourself.
5. Keep Showing Up
There could be many reasons why you might not enjoy your first class, it might not have been the right level for you, you might have struggled to understand the breathing techniques or the teacher might not have been the one for you but please don’t give up after your first class. Pilates and yoga is all about consistency and the more you go the more you will fall in love with how it makes you feel inside and out. Joseph Pilates said “in ten sessions you will feel the difference, in twenty you will see the difference and in thirty you will have a whole new body.” Change doesn’t happen overnight so keep showing up no matter what and have confidence that every session is taking you a step closer to that whole new you.
